Classroom Expectations
First and foremost, I expect all students to behave with respect and kindness to others. I want the classroom to be a safe place where all students feel successful and accepted. Students are encouraged to work out small conflicts on their own before coming to a teacher, then involving an adult if the conflict is not resolved. I encourage the kids to talk to each other face to face when a conflict arises to avoid tattling and gossip. If a student is involved in a major behavior issue (or several minor issues in one day), a behavior slip will be filled out. This will come home with the student, and you as parents are expected to sign this and have your child return it to school.
I have two rewards programs going on in class. The first is an individual program where students can earn "tickets". I give tickets out most often for being prepared to learn: having materials out, sitting quietly, being a good listener. I will also give tickets for showing kindness to others. When a student fills up the chart for tickets earned, he/she will have a reward with me during lunchtime. The second is a class-wide reward for when we have substitutes or guests. Having a new adult in charge can be challenging for students, so the class can earn "brownie points" for excellent behavior when I am out sick or at a meeting. The "brownies" can be earned for being good listeners, completing work, and being respectful. When the pan of "brownies" is full, we will vote on a class reward.
I expect all students to try their best on all work in class and at home. I feel strongly that it is OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES! That is often how we learn the best. When given a task, I expect students to stay focused on that task and complete the work. When homework is not passed in on time, students must use their free time to work on this while they eat snack. If students refuse to do this, then they will work during part of their recess. Saying this, I also expect students to ask for help when needed. I often pull small groups to help with difficult tasks, or can give a quick one-to-one coaching for a math problem or other issue. If a child is shy and has difficulty asking for help, we can work out a signaling system that isn't too scary. :)
Overall, I want this to be a safe place where all students have the opportunity to learn and work. The students are the ones that can make that happen by being responsible, safe, and respectful.
