September
Social Studies:
This month we will focus on reading maps. This includes learning the major compass directions (north, south, east, west) and using a compass rose. Students will learn about "perspective" in maps, and learn to use a map key.
Science:
We might begin our unit on the Human Body at the end of the month, but this mostly happens in October. Stay tuned!
Math:
Our first unit will focus on a review of skills: number lines, telling time, counting coins, and addition.
Reading:
We will begin our year setting up the rules and routines of Reader's Workshop. We will review how to monitor ourselves for choosing just right books. We will review reading strategies and practice them. We will begin to stretch our silent reading stamina to 30 minutes.
Writing:
We will begin by establishing our rules and routines of Writer's Workshop. We will learn what kind of tools we we be using this year, how to organize our writing in binders, and how to plan out stories. We will begin with writing non-fiction and reviewing the text features that are included with writing in this genre.
Word Study:
Students will be given a spelling assessment in the middle of September. From this, we will sort kids into spelling groups. I team-teach with Ms. Sleeper next door, and we will have several spelling groups including short vowel, blends and digraphs, long vowel, and other vowels. We usually begin these groups around the last week of September.
